In Karnataka, a ration card is not just an identity document; it is the pillar of food security for lakhs of poor and middle class families. This card is essential to get rice, wheat, cereals and other essential items at subsidized rates.

The system, which is implemented under the National Food Security Act, is managed by the Food and Civil Supplies Department in the state. Several important updates regarding new ration card applications have been released in early 2026. While general applications are currently temporarily stopped, only some special groups are allowed.

Current situation: Why the halt?

The government has undertaken a purge to make the ration card system more transparent and fair. The process of identifying and canceling ineligible cards is underway.

According to some reports, the government is worried that the number of BPL cards in the state has increased to more than 75% of the population. This will:

Who can apply now?
Currently, only some special categories are allowed to apply for new ration cards.

1. E-Shram Card Holders

Unorganized workers, daily wage workers are eligible.

Must not have EPFO ​​or ESI membership

2. PVTG community

Preference is given especially to the most backward tribal communities.

3. Health emergency

Those who require serious medical treatment can apply with medical records.

These special applications can be submitted from October 4, 2025 to March 31, 2026. Corrections in existing cards are also possible during this period.

AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana)

BPL families are provided with 35 kg of grains per month at a reduced rate. AAY category gets more subsidy.

The timings of the centers are usually from 10 am to 5 pm. The process may take 15 to 30 days. In urgent cases, the process may be completed within 7 days.

The following documents are mandatory for the application:

  1. Aadhaar card of all family members
  2. Residence proof (electricity bill or voter ID)
  3. Income certificate
  4. Caste certificate (if required)
  5. Passport size photo
  6. Birth certificate for children below 6 years
  7. Medical records for health emergencies
  8. E-Shram card (for special applications)

Biometric authentication is mandatory. Legal action may be taken if false information is provided.

Benefits and new developments

In addition to getting subsidized food items through ration card, one also gets eligibility for other state schemes. Distribution of “Indira Ahara Kit” is expected in January-February 2026.
